The executive branch includes seven elected officials, including
the head of the state--the governor. Governors in Arkansas
used to serve a short two-year term. Since 1986, that term
has been increased to four years. Governors may be
reelected once.
The other six constitutional officers are also elected for
four-year terms, including the lieutenant governor, the
secretary, the treasurer, the attorney general, the auditor, and
the commissioner of state lands. Even though the governor
is head of the executive branch, he or she also plays an
important part in the legislative process (the passing of new
laws). The governor has the power to veto (stop) the
passing of a law that he or she does not approve of.
