Arkansas State Government

The Executive Branch

The executive branch includes seven elected officials, including the head of the state--the governor.  Governors in Arkansas used to serve a short two-year term.  Since 1986, that term has been increased to four years.  Governors may be reelected once.
The other six constitutional officers are also elected for four-year terms, including the lieutenant governor, the secretary, the treasurer, the attorney general, the auditor, and the commissioner of state lands.  Even though the governor is head of the executive branch, he or she also plays an important part in the legislative process (the passing of new laws).  The governor has the power to veto (stop) the passing of a law that he or she does not approve of.

Current Executive Branch:

Governor Mike Huckabee
Lt. Governor Win Rockefellar
Secretary of State Charlie Daniels
Attorney General Mike Bebee
Auditor Jim Wood
Land Commissioner Mark Wilcox
Treasurer Gus Wingfield
