The state legislature is called the General Assembly. It
is Arkansas' lawmaking group. The General Assembly has two
houses or parts -- a 35-member senate and a 100-member house of
representatives. Senators serve a four-year term and may
be reelected once. Representatives serve a two-year
term and may be reelected twice. The senators and
representatives work part-time for the state; most hold other
jobs outside of their legislative work. As legislators,
they work to create new laws on issues such as crime, the
environment, taxes and commendations (such as honoring a local
hero).
